About

About Hornvík

A broad wilderness bay in Hornstrandir between Hornbjarg and Hælavíkurbjarg, known for seabirds, Arctic foxes and dramatic hiking.

Hike beneath Hornbjarg and Hælavíkurbjarg in one of the wildest and most spectacular bays in Hornstrandir.

Hornvík is one of the most dramatic bays in Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, set between the great bird cliffs of Hornbjarg and Hælavíkurbjarg. The bay has broad grassy lowlands surrounded by steep mountains, creating a natural base for hikers exploring the northern part of the reserve. The area is known for rich birdlife and frequent Arctic fox sightings. Because human settlement and grazing pressure have been absent or limited for decades, the vegetation and wildlife feel noticeably different from many more developed parts of Iceland. The surrounding cliffs and hiking routes provide some of the most memorable scenery in the Westfjords. Reaching Hornvík requires planning. Access is generally by boat and hiking, and there are no normal town services once you are in the reserve. Weather can change quickly, routes can be demanding and travellers must be prepared to carry appropriate equipment. For experienced and well-prepared visitors, Hornvík is one of the defining wilderness experiences in Iceland.

Folklore

Story & Folklore

For many hikers, arriving in Hornvík is the moment Hornstrandir reveals its full scale. The bay opens between immense sea cliffs, while broad grassy flats and streams occupy the valley floor. Arctic foxes are often seen in the reserve, and the surrounding routes lead toward some of the most dramatic coastal viewpoints in Iceland. There are no urban comforts here—the experience is defined by wilderness, weather and distance.
