The history of Hólmsberg is primarily tied to its role as a navigational landmark along the Reykjanes coastline. While the rugged cliffs themselves are ancient, formed by volcanic activity over millennia, the human element of significance arrived in the mid-20th century. The most prominent historical feature is the Hólmsbergsviti lighthouse, which was constructed in 1956. This conical tower was built to ensure the safe passage of ships navigating the waters off the Reykjanes peninsula, an area known for its unpredictable weather and powerful seas. Its presence highlights the importance of this coastal stretch for maritime activity. Beyond its functional purpose, Hólmsberg has long been appreciated by locals as 'Bergið' (The Rock), a place of natural beauty and, more recently, a destination for outdoor activities like rock climbing. Hólmsberg forms a prominent coastal edge north of Keflavík in Reykjanesbær. Offshore stands the rock stack Stakkur, while Helguvík lies below the northern part of the cliffs. The area offers broad coastal views but includes steep and exposed terrain, so visitors should keep well back from cliff edges and respect industrial and restricted areas around Helguvík.
