Hellnar is a tiny settlement at the base of the Snæfellsnes lava field — a single café, a few summer cottages and the dramatic coastline that makes the Hellnar–Arnarstapi walk one of Iceland's finest. The cliffs here are riddled with sea arches, caves and inlets carved by the Atlantic into the basalt. The cave of Baðstofa, just below the café, produces extraordinary sound effects as waves compress air through its narrow opening. Kittiwakes and Arctic terns nest on every available ledge. The café in summer serves excellent fish soup with a direct view of the sea stacks and Snæfellsjökull glacier rising behind. Jules Verne wrote about this coastline and it is easy to see why he associated it with the entrance to another world.
