„Grettir Ásmundarson var eitt gæfusnauðasta en jafnframt ódælasta og um leið eitt spakasta hraustmenni sögualdarinnar.“ Grettir var „veginn í Drangey ásamt Illuga, bróður sínum, og að því búnu færðu banamennirnir Ásdísi á Bjargi, móður Grettis, höfuð hans. Þótti það ómannlega gert“ (1). Banamaður Grettis, Þorbjörn öngull, hugðist fara með höfuðið á Þingvöll, en gróf það á Stórasandi. Ásdís lét sækja það og grafa að kirkju á Bjargi (2,4). Í túninu á Bjargi er Grettisþúfa þar sem höfuð Grettis á að vera grafið og er hún friðlýst (1). Þúfan er í raun steinn, söguskilti er á staðnum og minnismerki um Ásdísi móður Grettis er í göngufæri (3).
