History & Background
Until 2011, Glymur was considered the tallest waterfall in Iceland, until satellite measurements revealed that Morsárfoss in Vatnajökull National Park reaches 228 metres. Despite losing the title, Glymur remains the most accessible tall waterfall in Iceland and a popular hiking destination. The canyon was carved by the Botnsá river, which drains Hvalvatn lake — itself formed in the crater of an ancient volcanic explosion. The Hvalfjörður area was strategically important during World War II when it served as an Allied naval base.
Glymur, majestically situated in Botnsdalur at the head of Hvalfjörður, stands as one of West Iceland's most impressive natural spectacles. Renowned for its dramatic beauty, it invites adventurers to undertake a challenging hike to fully appreciate its grandeur. The waterfall itself is a magnificent, multi-tiered cascade, seen plunging down dark, stratified rock faces adorned with vibrant green moss, as depicted in the image. The trail winds through varied terrain, including a river crossing and ascents along steep canyon walls, promising breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and the fjord beyond. Reaching the upper viewpoints, visitors are rewarded with spectacular perspectives of the powerful water as it carves its path through the rugged landscape. This journey is more than just a hike; it's an immersive experience into the heart of Iceland's raw, untamed wilderness, offering profound solitude and unparalleled photographic opportunities.
