The name itself, meaning 'Gallows Hill,' speaks to its grim function. The most famous and poignant story associated with Gálgaás involves a notorious case from bygone times. It was here that Valtýr á Eyjólfsstöðum was put to death for alleged theft and murder, steadfastly proclaiming his innocence until his final moments. A tragic twist of fate unfolded 14 years later when the real perpetrator, who remarkably also bore the name Valtýr, was identified. He, too, faced his destiny at Gálgaás. Folklore recounts that for a long time afterward, his bones remained visible beneath the ridge, refusing to stay buried, regardless of how often they were interred, a haunting testament to the site's profound and sorrowful history.
