About Egilsstaðir – Gateway to East Iceland
Egilsstaðir is the main service town of East Iceland, situated at the northern end of Lake Lagarfljót. Despite being only founded in the 1940s, it has grown into the regional hub for the east with the area's main hospital, shops, airport and cultural facilities. The East Iceland Heritage Museum has excellent exhibits on local history, geology and folklore. The town is the gateway to the Eastfjords, the Vatnajökull glacier and the highland interior.
