This fissure, like others in the Þingvellir area, is a direct result of the continuous pulling apart of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This slow, persistent separation causes the land to stretch and crack, forming dramatic fissures and canyons that are then filled with water. The water itself has a fascinating history. It originates from the Langjökull glacier, making a journey through underground lava fields that can take anywhere from 30 to 100 years. During this extensive filtration process, the water becomes exceptionally pure and clear, devoid of sediments and organic matter, creating the unparalleled visibility that divers and snorkelers experience today.
