Caves of Hella (Hellar við Ægissíðu)

The caves at Ægissíða are among Iceland's best-known man-made caves. Named chambers include Fjóshellir, Búrhellir and Hellistúnshellir, and generations of farmers adapted the soft sandstone for livestock, hay storage and other practical uses. Carvings and crosses in some chambers have prompted theories about much earlier origins, but pre-Norse construction has not been established. Public visits are managed through guided tours, helping protect the archaeological site while explaining its documented history and unresolved questions.
