Aragerði (skrúðgarður)
About Aragerði (skrúðgarður)
Þarna eru haldin mannamót, m.a. árlegir Fjölskyldudagar, bæjarhátíð Sveitarfélagsins Voga.“
History & Background
Aragerði, while steeped in legend, has a tangible history rooted in community spirit and a love for nature. Established in the late 20th century by local residents near Grindavík, this ornamental garden (skrúðgarður) was a testament to human perseverance in a challenging environment. The founders envisioned a green oasis that would not only beautify the area but also provide a space for recreation and a unique collection of plant species. Through dedicated effort, volunteers transformed a barren, rocky landscape into a thriving botanical haven. They carefully selected resilient plants, experimented with microclimates, and nurtured the garden over decades. Aragerði has since become a cherished local landmark, celebrated for its diverse flora, charming pathways, and serene atmosphere, proving that even in Iceland's stark volcanic regions, beauty can be cultivated with passion and dedication. Its existence, against the odds, lends itself perfectly to the local legends that have grown around it.
