A dark Icelandic legend tells of Loftur, a student obsessed with forbidden magic and the legendary book Rauðskinna.
In Icelandic folklore, Galdra-Loftur is remembered as a student whose hunger for magical knowledge became his undoing. Stories place him at Hólar, a historic centre of learning and religion in northern Iceland.
According to the legend, Loftur sought a powerful grimoire known as Rauðskinna, supposedly buried with a bishop. In the most dramatic telling, he entered the church at night and attempted to summon the dead to surrender the book. The spirits rose, but the confrontation overwhelmed him. Different versions disagree about precisely what happened next.
This is a traditional supernatural tale, not a documented account of necromancy. Hólar itself is a real historic site, making the contrast between the peaceful setting and the unsettling legend especially memorable.
