Dimmuborgir – City of Trolls

Step into Dimmuborgir, a labyrinth of bizarre lava formations near Lake Mývatn. Legend has it that this is the playground and dwelling of trolls, and even the devil himself once strode through these 'dark castles'. The otherworldly shapes, carved by ancient volcanic eruptions and subsequent erosion, spark the imagination, making it easy to believe that hidden creatures might reside within its shadowy recesses.

Many of these natural sculptures have been given names reflecting their supposed inhabitants or their appearance, such as 'The Church' or 'The Gate'. During the Christmas season, the area takes on an even more magical aura, as it's said to be the home of the Yule Lads, Iceland's thirteen mischievous trolls who visit children in the days leading up to Christmas.
