Þverárvöllur is a 9-hole, par 36 layout in the Fljótshlíð valley beneath the Eyjafjöll mountain range in South Iceland. The fairways are framed by the volcanic silhouette of Eyjafjallajökull to the east and Tindfjallajökull to the north. History
The Hellishólar estate has been a working farm and equestrian property for generations. A 9-hole golf course was developed on the estate grounds, almost certainly in the 1980s or early 1990s, to serve the local Fljótshlíð community and supplement the estate's income from rural tourism. The current owner, Víðir Jóhannsson, took over the estate in 2004 and continued to operate the course as part of a broader equestrian and accommodation offering. Golfklúbburinn á Hellishólum is registered with Rastimar as an active course and accepts visitor bookings. The club's founding date remains unverified from publicly available sources; no official year appears on hellisholar.is or the GSI registry.
Story
The Fljótshlíð valley is one of the most scenic corridors in South Iceland: a long, south-facing hillside with Eyjafjallajökull and Tindfjallajaokull as the backdrop and the flat southern lowlands stretching to the sea below. Þverárvöllur sits on the valley floor, flanked on either side by the two rivers from which it takes its name. On several holes the river is not a background element but a direct presence alongside the fairway — the sound of running glacial water accompanying every shot. The combination of mountain views, river-bordered holes, and the equestrian estate setting makes this one of the most distinctly Icelandic rural golf experiences available in the South.
