Christmas & New Year in Reykjavík: what to know first

Reykjavík is atmospheric in December: illuminated streets, Christmas trees, cosy cafés and a New Year's Eve filled with neighbourhood bonfires and fireworks. But 24, 25 and 26 December, 31 December and 1 January have very different opening hours. This guide focuses on what visitors can realistically do in 2026–27.

Plan your Christmas Eve dinner and New Year's Eve meal well ahead. Book individual tours only when the provider shows actual availability for your chosen date, and allow extra time for weather, icy pavements and reduced services.

Restaurant information below uses the restaurant-reply research published by Iceland Highlights, last checked 9 October 2026; it has not been independently reconfirmed with each restaurant by GoIceTravel. Holiday schedules can change. Always check the venue's own latest information before going.

At a glance: the five key holiday dates

24 December (Christmas Eve): Many shops and services close early, and some restaurants close altogether. Dinner usually requires advance planning; a booked set menu is the safest option.

25 December (Christmas Day): Most shops and many attractions are closed. Select hotels, cafés and restaurants can still be open; confirm an actual table reservation in advance.

26 December (Boxing Day): More cafés, restaurants and some activities reopen, although hours may remain shorter than normal.

31 December (New Year's Eve): Plan festive dining early, then enjoy neighbourhood bonfires and widespread fireworks around midnight. Some restaurants run fixed seatings or set menus only.

1 January (New Year's Day): Expect late opening, closed businesses and limited transport. It is a good day for a relaxed walk, a confirmed lagoon or museum slot, or an operator-confirmed guided tour.

Restaurants open at Christmas in Reykjavík

These are reported 2026–27 holiday plans, not live table availability. A venue marked 'open' may be fully booked, may offer a special menu only, or may close its kitchen before its doors.

Examples reported open on Christmas Eve (24 December): Geiri Smart, Hjá Jóni, Steikhúsið, Kopar Restaurant and Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar. Kaffi Loki is reported open only until 16:00, so it is a daytime option, not an evening meal.

Examples reported open on Christmas Day (25 December): Geiri Smart, Hjá Jóni, Steikhúsið, Kopar, Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar and Kaffi Loki. Apótek and Matur og Drykkur were also reported open for evening service; specific hours may reflect their usual schedule rather than a fresh holiday confirmation.

Examples reported open on New Year's Eve (31 December): Geiri Smart, Hjá Jóni, Steikhúsið, Kopar, Monkeys, Grillmarkaðurinn, Forréttabarinn, Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar and Kaffi Loki. The offerings vary greatly: some require reservations, some have a set menu and some operate daytime-only service.

Not every restaurant is open. For example, 3 Frakkar, Dill and Austur Indía félagið were listed as closed on all five major holiday dates. Never assume a Google Maps 'Open now' label is an accurate holiday schedule.

24 December: Christmas Eve dinner and early closures

In Iceland the main Christmas family celebration takes place on the evening of 24 December, so dinner is the date most visitors should plan first. For a sit-down meal, favour restaurants explicitly taking reservations that night.

The restaurant replies list Geiri Smart 16:30–22:30 (last seating 20:00); Hjá Jóni 12:00–21:00; Steikhúsið with set-menu seatings at 18:00 and 20:30; Kopar 18:00–23:30; and Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar with Christmas dinner seatings.

Sandholt Bistro Bakery was reported open 07:30–14:00 and Kaffi Loki 08:00–16:00. Those are useful daytime options, not replacements for a booked dinner.

Order groceries beforehand. Krónan's reported Christmas Eve hours end by 15:00 and selected Hagkaup stores by 14:00–16:00, according to the 9 October 2026 roundup. Exact branches may differ.

25 December: Christmas Day without getting stuck

Christmas Day is quieter and many independent shops and attractions are closed. Build the day around a pre-booked meal, a scenic walk if weather allows, and a confirmed activity.

The reported restaurant replies include Christmas Day service at Geiri Smart, Hjá Jóni, Steikhúsið, Kopar, Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar and Kaffi Loki. Apótek's 17:00–23:00 indication uses usual hours and should be reconfirmed.

Most large grocery chains are closed on 25 December. Buy snacks, medicine and other essentials before the holiday. Check museum, swimming pool and lagoon websites individually rather than relying on ordinary weekday schedules.

26 December: Boxing Day openings

Boxing Day is easier for visitors because some businesses resume service. Among venues reporting openings are Forréttabarinn (16:00–23:00), Grillmarkaðurinn (17:30–23:00), Monkeys (17:00–23:00), Steikhúsið (17:00–23:00), Jómfrúin (11:00–22:00) and Sandholt (07:30–16:00).

Check city buses and tour pickup locations separately. A tour can run while a local venue is closed, and snowy roads can cause last-minute changes.

31 December: where to eat and how to celebrate

New Year's Eve is popular for special menus. The restaurant replies list Geiri Smart, Hjá Jóni, Steikhúsið and Kopar among venues open that night; Grillmarkaðurinn, Monkeys and Forréttabarinn also advertise New Year's Eve service or set menus.

Book an early enough seating to allow time to see a bonfire or reach your chosen fireworks viewpoint. Ask the restaurant about the latest arrival, kitchen closing and any prepayment or cancellation policy.

Reykjavík is famous for fireworks across many neighbourhoods rather than a single municipal midnight display. Hallgrímskirkja and central Reykjavík can be lively, crowded viewing areas; leave room for safe walking and possible temporary traffic restrictions.

1 January: New Year's Day

New Year's Day is generally quiet. Reported dining options include Steikhúsið (17:00–23:00), Forréttabarinn (16:00–23:00), Monkeys (17:00–23:00) and Sandholt (07:30–16:00), along with several hotel restaurants.

Some transport services use a holiday schedule and some grocery shops remain shut. Confirm everything on the actual date; do not assume a Christmas Eve schedule repeats on 1 January.

Christmas lights, markets and winter walks

Start with a relaxed walk through downtown Reykjavík: Laugavegur's holiday lights, Austurvöllur's Christmas tree, the central streets around Ingólfstorg and Hallgrímskirkja make an easy self-guided route.

Ingólfstorg has hosted seasonal ice skating and festive activities in previous years, and the Christmas Village in nearby Hafnarfjörður is a popular seasonal tradition. Dates, hours, ticket rules and whether each 2026 event takes place must be checked with the organisers before making a firm plan.

If time allows, explore Reykjavík's Old Harbour, Harpa and the waterfront in the daytime. In winter, a short walk is often more enjoyable than an ambitious route in icy weather.

Bonfires and midnight fireworks: practical tips

Neighbourhood bonfires (áramótabrennur) are a Reykjavík tradition on 31 December. The city normally publishes an official list of venues and times closer to New Year's Eve. Do not treat a previous year's locations or times as confirmed for 2026.

For a fireworks viewpoint, central streets around Hallgrímskirkja are dramatic but can be crowded. Alternatively choose a sensible open view near your accommodation; avoid blocking streets or entering private property.

Protect your eyes, keep children clear of fireworks, follow official safety restrictions, dress warmly and wear shoes with good winter grip. Never launch fireworks toward people, buildings or traffic. Weather and wind can change the experience.

Festive tours and activities to look for

The Reykjavík Christmas Food Tour (TourDesk item 355365-1) is a seasonal food-and-walking experience featuring Icelandic Christmas flavours such as smoked lamb and laufabrauð. Check available dates before making plans; a published product listing is not a confirmed departure on every holiday.

The Icelandic New Year's Eve Walking Tour (TourDesk item 369546-1) is another relevant seasonal product. It is essential to check whether it operates on 31 December 2026 before promoting a specific departure.

Year-round categories worth checking for holiday departures include Northern Lights tours, Golden Circle day trips, Reykjavík walking tours, Sky Lagoon or other geothermal bathing and, in suitable conditions, winter whale watching. Opening hours, weather, pickup and supplier rules all vary.

To keep GoIceTravel booking attribution intact, use the tour search and embedded TourDesk booking products on GoIceTravel rather than sending travellers to an unrelated third-party checkout. Holiday-specific products should appear only when linked to a real product and confirmed date.

Check Northern Lights Tours During the Holidays

Choose your date and confirm live availability. A clear sky and favourable conditions are not guaranteed.

Find real-date options for Golden Circle, geothermal lagoons, city tours and more. Confirm the operator runs on 24–26 December, 31 December or 1 January before booking.

Schedules change: check the operator, municipality or public agency directly.

Christmas with children and indoor alternatives

Good family options can include city light walks, the tree at Austurvöllur, festive window displays, museums and indoor attractions on days that actually operate, and a warming break at a café.

Swimming pools can be a highlight of an Iceland holiday, but individual pool Christmas hours vary. Check Reykjavík City official listings before going, and never promise that a specific pool is open on Christmas Day.

On stormy or icy days, favour a planned indoor activity or an easy neighbourhood walk over a long self-drive journey. Keep a flexible backup activity for each day.

Transport, supermarkets and essential services

Do most of your grocery shopping by 23 December. Large stores often close early on 24 December, many close on 25 December, and New Year's Day service is limited. Do not assume that every branch of a chain has identical hours.

Strætó and airport transfers may use holiday timetables. Check Strætó for the exact date and Flybus or your chosen airport transfer for a booked departure. Taxi availability and pickup times may be different during busy celebrations.

Restaurants can operate independently of attraction or public transport schedules. For winter driving, check road conditions on road.is and weather alerts on vedur.is before setting out.

Winter weather and emergency advice

December and January bring short daylight, icy footpaths, wind and quickly changing weather. Wear layered waterproof clothing, warm gloves, footwear with grip and reflective details when walking at night.

Before leaving Reykjavík for the Golden Circle, South Coast or Reykjanes Peninsula, check the official weather warning map and road conditions. Even an organised tour may be rescheduled for safety.

In an emergency call 112. For travel alerts and road safety, consult SafeTravel; check the Icelandic Met Office and Road and Coastal Administration for current conditions.

A realistic 3-day Reykjavík holiday itinerary

Day 1 — Before Christmas: Explore decorated Laugavegur and Austurvöllur, stop at a café, then try a Christmas food tour if your date is available. Reserve dinner ahead.

Day 2 — Christmas Eve or Christmas Day: Make a relaxed city walk and a pre-booked meal the anchor of the day. Do not depend on museums, restaurants or shops without confirmed opening.

Day 3 — New Year's Eve: Enjoy a daytime experience with verified departure, an early festive dinner, an official neighbourhood bonfire if announced, and fireworks around midnight if weather and safety conditions allow.

Swap outdoor days around based on forecasts. A flexible trip is better than a tightly timed schedule over Iceland's winter holidays.
