About Skjálfandi

Sheltered bay beside Húsavík renowned for whale watching, seabirds and mountain-backed sea views.

Experience the marine landscape that made Húsavík Iceland's best-known whale-watching town.

Skjálfandi is a large bay on the north coast of Iceland, with Húsavík on its eastern shore. The bay's relatively sheltered waters, productive marine environment and surrounding mountain scenery have made it one of the most important whale-watching destinations in the country. Whale-watching trips from Húsavík search for several cetacean species. Humpback and minke whales are frequent highlights, while dolphins and occasional blue whales may also be encountered. Birdlife is another major part of the ecosystem, and nearby islands and coastal cliffs support large seabird populations during the breeding season. Skjálfandi is not a single roadside attraction: its character is best understood from the water or from viewpoints around Húsavík and Tjörnes. Traditional oak boats, modern vessels and smaller RIB tours all operate in the bay. Because wildlife and sea conditions vary, visitors should choose reputable operators, dress for cold conditions and allow nature to determine the experience.
