Húnavatn

Húnavatn lies in the lowland wetland system where Vatnsdalur opens toward the coast in northwest North Iceland. The lake is connected to a broader mosaic of river channels, wet meadows and water bodies extending along Vatnsdalsá and Flóðið toward the sea. This lowland area is recognised for its natural habitats and birdlife. During migration periods it can support large concentrations of birds, including whooper swans and geese, and the wetlands also provide important moulting and feeding habitat. Húnavatn is not a developed tourist attraction with extensive facilities. Its value is ecological and scenic, and it is best appreciated responsibly from public roads, established stopping points and nearby viewpoints such as Skúlahóll. Visitors should avoid disturbing birds or entering sensitive wet ground.
