About Gamli Garðskagavitinn

The old Garðskagi lighthouse was built in 1897 and stands beside the taller lighthouse that replaced it in 1944.

To see one of Iceland's distinctive paired lighthouse sites and a tangible piece of Suðurnes maritime history.

The old Garðskagi lighthouse was built in 1897 on Garðskagatá. The square concrete tower is about 12.5 metres high and originally used an oil lamp and rotating optical equipment. A keeper's shelter was attached to the lighthouse because the mechanism required regular attention during the night. Coastal erosion and heavy surf eventually made a new, taller lighthouse necessary. The replacement was built nearby in 1944, but the old lighthouse was retained. Today the two towers stand together in a coastal area that is also known for sea views and migratory birdlife.
