About Viðgelmir
Viðgelmir is a remarkable volcanic wonder in West Iceland. This dramatic landscape was shaped by powerful volcanic forces over thousands of years. Visitors can witness the raw geological power of Iceland's volcanic heritage through dramatic lava fields, craters and unique rock formations.
📖 Story
Viðgelmir is Iceland's largest lava tube — a cave 1,585 metres long and up to 15 metres wide, formed when the outer crust of a lava flow solidified while molten rock continued flowing inside, eventually draining out and leaving the tube behind. The cave is part of the Hallmundarhraun lava field, erupted from beneath the Langjökull glacier around 900 AD. Inside Viðgelmir, guided tours lead visitors past ice formations, lava stalactites and wall coatings of vivid colours from mineral oxidisation — oranges, yellows, blacks and blues. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 4°C — cold enough for year-round ice in its inner chambers. The guided experience is among the most accessible and impressive cave tours in Iceland.
