Þórufoss Waterfall

About Þórufoss Waterfall

Þórufoss is located on the Laxá á Kjósi river, a famous salmon river running through a scenic valley north of Mosfellsbær. The waterfall drops approximately 16 metres over a broad basalt ledge into a pool below, and a well-marked trail leads to viewing points above and beside the falls. The walk to the waterfall takes about 20 to 30 minutes from the car park, passing through open lava terrain with views of the surrounding valley. The gorge walls display typical columnar basalt formations shaped by ancient lava flows. Because of its proximity to Reykjavík, Þórufoss is popular with local hikers and families, but it remains far quieter than South Coast waterfalls like Skógafoss or Seljalandsfoss. It is an excellent option for visitors spending time in the capital who want to see a genuine Icelandic waterfall without a long drive.

📖 Story

While most Iceland visitors travel hours to reach famous waterfalls, Þórufoss sits just 30 minutes from Reykjavík's city centre — yet remains relatively uncrowded because it lies off the main tourist trail. The Laxá á Kjósi river that feeds the falls is one of Iceland's famous salmon rivers, and the gorge setting with its columnar basalt walls creates a beautiful natural amphitheatre around the cascade.
