About

Systrafoss is a two-tiered waterfall located in the centre of Kirkjubæjarklaustur village on Iceland's South Coast. The falls drop approximately 40 metres in total, with water cascading down moss-covered basalt cliffs. The waterfall is named after the Catholic nuns (systrar) who lived in a convent here prior to the Reformation. Legend tells of two nuns who were punished for breaking their vows — one was buried alive, the other drowned. The falls have borne their name ever since. A well-maintained hiking trail and wooden staircase lead from the village up alongside the waterfall to a viewpoint at the top. The hike takes about 15–20 minutes and offers excellent views over Kirkjubæjarklaustur, the Skaftá river valley, and the vast lava fields stretching to the south. Kirkjubæjarklaustur is a convenient stop on the South Coast ring road route, and Systrafoss provides an easy and rewarding short walk for travellers passing through. The village also has services, accommodation and other nearby attractions such as Kirkjugólf basalt columns and Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon.

📖 Story

Systrafoss takes its name from the Catholic nuns ('systrar' means 'sisters') who lived in a convent in Kirkjubæjarklaustur before the Reformation in 1550. According to legend, two nuns broke their vows and were buried alive as punishment. The waterfall has carried their name ever since, a sombre reminder of Iceland's medieval religious history. Today it is a peaceful spot, with wooden stairways leading to the top and sweeping views over the village and surrounding lava fields.
