History & Background
The history of Stórólfshvolskirkja is deeply intertwined with the local community of South Iceland. While the current structure dates back to 1930, it stands on grounds that have likely hosted places of worship for centuries, reflecting Iceland's long Christian tradition which formally began with the democratic decision at Alþingi in 1000 AD. The present wooden church was constructed by master builder Guðmundur Þórðarson from Lambalæk in Fljótshlíð, designed to comfortably seat about 120 parishioners. Its exterior, clad in corrugated iron, showcases a pragmatic architectural approach common in Iceland, providing excellent protection against the elements while maintaining a distinctive aesthetic. Inside, the church boasts a rich artistic legacy. In 1955, the interior was beautifully painted and decorated by Gréta and Jón Björnsson, adding to its charm. One of its most significant treasures is the altarpiece, painted in 1914 by Þórarinn B. Þorláksson, a prominent Icelandic artist. This piece, depicting Jesus blessing the children, is a poignant representation of faith and an important work of Icelandic art, making the church not just a place of worship but also a cultural landmark.
