About

Stakkholtsgja is a dramatic gorge located near the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur on Iceland's South Coast. The canyon is carved through layers of ancient basalt lava, with sheer moss-covered walls rising up to 100 metres on either side. The gorge is approximately 2 km long and is accessed via a short gravel track off Route 209 (the road to Lakagígar). From the parking area, a walking trail follows the canyon floor through lush vegetation and over stepping stones across the stream. The trail ends at a small but picturesque waterfall deep inside the canyon. The interior of the canyon is cool, damp and sheltered, creating ideal conditions for moss, ferns and other plant life. The walls are covered in thick layers of green moss, which contrasts beautifully with the dark basalt rock. The atmosphere is peaceful and almost otherworldly. Stakkholtsgja is not marked on most tourist maps and sees relatively few visitors compared to nearby attractions like Fjaðrárgljúfur. The hike is easy and suitable for most fitness levels, though it can be muddy after rain. The round trip from the parking area takes 1–2 hours.

Most travellers rushing along the South Coast miss Stakkholtsgja entirely — yet those who venture down the unmarked track discover one of Iceland's most magical hidden spots. The canyon walls are draped in thick green moss, the air is cool and damp, and a stream winds through the narrow passage toward a secluded waterfall at the far end. It feels like stepping into a secret world. The gorge is especially beautiful after rain when the moss glows bright green and water trickles down the canyon walls.
