Story & Folklore
Rauðfeldsgjá is a narrow gorge on the Snæfellsnes peninsula that cuts deep into the mountainside — dark, claustrophobic and utterly unlike anything on the peninsula's open lava fields. A small stream runs through the bottom. Wading up the stream into the gorge, the walls close in to shoulder-width in places, the light drops away, and the sound of water reverberates off the rock. According to the Bárðar saga, this is where Bárður Snæfellsás dragged his nephew Rauðfeldur into the cliffs as punishment for mistreating his daughter. In summer, the contrast between stepping from the sunny open hillside into the cold dark gorge is one of Snæfellsnes's best simple experiences.
