History & Background

The history of Ólafsvíkurkirkja is a blend of continuity and change, reflecting the evolving needs of the local community. The current church building, a distinctive example of mid-20th-century Icelandic architecture, was consecrated on November 19, 1967. It was designed by the architect Hákon Hertervig and quickly became a landmark for its modern, angular aesthetic. This church succeeded an earlier structure built in Ólafsvík in 1892 on a site known as Snoppan. Before 1892, the parish was centered at Fróðá, a fact that caused some contention among parishioners living further east when the move to Ólafsvík was proposed. Despite its modern construction, Ólafsvíkurkirkja serves as a repository for much older artifacts, preserving a tangible connection to its ecclesiastical predecessors. Key items, including the pulpit, date back to the 18th century, having been originally presented to Fróðárkirkja in 1710. These historical pieces, along with the beautiful stained-glass windows by Gerður Helgadóttir and the donated pipe organ, enrich the church's interior, offering visitors a glimpse into centuries of Icelandic faith and artistry. The church continues to be an active part of the Ólafsvíkurprestakall within the Snæfellsnes – og Dalaprófastsdæmi, with out-churches at Brimilsvellir and Ingjaldshóll.
