History & Background
The history of Narfeyrarkirkja is a compelling narrative of perseverance against the formidable Icelandic elements. The church site at Narfeyri, historically known as Geirröðareyri, has been a center of worship for centuries, serving as the sole church on Skógarströnd until 1563. Following this, it became an annex church to Breiðabólsstað until 1970, when it joined Stykkishólmsprestakall. The current small timber church, though appearing humble, has a dramatic past. A church built on the site in 1888 tragically collapsed on December 23rd of the same year due to severe weather. Undeterred, the community rebuilt a new church in 1889. However, this structure also proved vulnerable, shifting on its foundation in a storm in 1897 and being completely blown away a year later. The present Narfeyrarkirkja was then constructed in 1899, embodying the unwavering spirit and determination of the local population to maintain their sacred space despite repeated natural disasters.
