The spiritual roots of Lundarkirkja run deep, tracing back to the 11th century when a church is believed to have first stood on this hallowed ground. Dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God, and Saint Lawrence, it has served as a pivotal spiritual hub for the residents of Lundarreykjadalur for nearly a millennium. For centuries, Lundur was also a significant rectory, guiding the faithful through the ebb and flow of Icelandic life. While the legal status of the rectory was rescinded on November 16, 1907, its function as a spiritual center continued until 1932, following the passing of Séra Sigurður Jónsson, the last resident priest. Since then, Lundur has been associated with Hestþingum, now known as Hvanneyrarprestakall. The current, beautifully maintained white concrete church, with its distinctive red roof and spire, was consecrated on June 23, 1963, by Bishop Sigurbjörn Einarsson, replacing an older structure and continuing a tradition of faith that spans across generations.
