Book NowStory & Folklore
Lóndrangar is a pair of ancient volcanic plugs rising from the lava plains of the southern Snæfellsnes coastline — one 75 metres high, one 61 metres. They are the hardened remnants of lava vents whose surrounding cone has been eroded by millennia of wave action, leaving only the resistant volcanic core standing. Seabirds — fulmars, kittiwakes, razorbills — nest on every ledge. The coastline here, where the lava meets the Atlantic, is some of the most dramatic on the peninsula. A 3-kilometre circular walk from the car park visits the plugs, the coast and the Svalþúfa cave before returning through a lava heath landscape dotted with geothermal warmth.
