Story & Folklore
The Katla ice cave is carved into the Mýrdalsjökull glacier above one of Iceland's most dangerous volcanoes. Katla last erupted in 1918 and is considered overdue — which makes visiting the glacier above it a genuinely charged experience. The cave is formed by geothermal heat from the volcano below melting channels through the ancient glacier ice. The ice here is compressed over hundreds of years, creating deep blue and black tones that are different to other Icelandic ice caves. Access requires a guided tour from Vík or the glacier base, and the cave's exact location shifts as the glacier moves and conditions change. Available year-round but most stable October–March.
