About

Irafoss is a multi-tiered waterfall located deep within the Skaftafell area of Vatnajökull National Park. It is far less visited than nearby Svartifoss due to the length and difficulty of the hike required to reach it. The trail to Irafoss continues beyond Svartifoss and Sjónarnípa viewpoint, climbing steeply into the highlands. The round-trip hike from the Skaftafell visitor centre is approximately 12–15 km and takes 5–7 hours depending on pace and conditions. The terrain is rocky and can be slippery, especially after rain. The waterfall itself is fed by glacial meltwater from Skaftafellsjökull and Svínafellsjökull glaciers. It cascades down a steep, narrow gorge with multiple drops, creating a dramatic and powerful flow. The surrounding landscape is raw and barren, dominated by volcanic rock, glacier tongues and mountain ridges. Irafoss is suited for experienced hikers comfortable with unmarked trails and remote conditions. There are no facilities along the route. The hike is best attempted in summer (June–September) when daylight is long and weather more stable.
