Located directly beside Route 1, Grábrók makes an excellent quick stop for ring road travelers without requiring significant time or physical effort. Grábrók is a well-preserved scoria crater standing about 170 metres above the surrounding lava plain near the town of Bifröst in West Iceland. The crater is part of a small volcanic field that erupted around 3,400 years ago and can be climbed via a circular boardwalk trail in approximately 15 to 20 minutes from the car park. The summit offers panoramic views across the surrounding Norðurá river valley, Eiríksjökull glacier, and the varied landscapes of West Iceland. Several information panels along the trail explain the geology and formation of the crater. Located directly beside Route 1, Grábrók makes an excellent quick stop for ring road travelers without requiring significant time or physical effort. Grábrók is one of a trio of volcanic craters that erupted approximately 3,400 years ago, sending lava flows across the West Iceland landscape. The smallest of the three craters was destroyed to extract lava aggregate in the 20th century, but Grábrók itself was protected and a trail was built to allow visitors to experience the crater safely. Today it is one of the easiest volcanic crater hikes in Iceland — short, rewarding, and accessible to almost all visitors.

Snorri's Pool and the Old Spirits
West Iceland is steeped in saga history, and the area around Reykholt — where the great saga writer Snorri Sturluson lived — is said to be home to the spirits of the old saga characters. According to local lore, on the longest night of winter, the ghosts of Viking-age heroes emerge from the hot springs to hold their own assembly, debating matters of honor and revenge just as they did in the sagas written about them. Snorri's medieval hot pool (Snorralaug) is considered a place where the veil between past and present is thin, and visitors sometimes report feeling an unusual sense of presence when visiting on quiet evenings.
