About
Fáskrúðsfjörður (often shortened to Fáskrúði) is a fishing village located on the eastern shore of a narrow fjord in East Iceland. The population is approximately 700, making it one of the larger settlements in the Eastfjords. The village is most famous for its French connection. From the 1880s to the 1930s, French fishing fleets operated extensively from Fáskrúðsfjörður, fishing for cod in Icelandic waters. At the peak, over 5,000 French sailors worked from the village each summer. They built facilities including: - A French hospital (now a museum) - A cemetery for French sailors who died far from home - Living quarters and warehouses - A church The **French Museum** (Franska) preserve s this unique history with exhibits on the fishing fleets, cultural exchange, and the French-Icelandic families that resulted from marriages between sailors and local women. The museum is housed in the former French hospital. Today, Fáskrúðsfjörður retains strong ties to France: - Bilingual Icelandic-French street signs throughout the village - French cultural events and festivals - Sister city relationship with French coastal towns - French-Icelandic heritage celebrated in local identity The village has a working harbor, fish processing facilities, accommodation, restaurants, supermarket, and swimming pool. The setting is dramatic, with mountains rising steeply from the narrow fjord.
📖 Story
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, French fishing fleets sailed to Iceland each year to fish Icelandic waters. Fáskrúðsfjörður became their main base — French sailors lived in the village for months at a time, married local women, built a hospital and cemetery, and left a cultural legacy that persists today. The village maintains bilingual Icelandic-French street signs, operates the unique French Museum documenting this history, and celebrates French culture annually. Few places in Iceland feel so connected to continental Europe as this small Eastfjords fishing town.
