About
Berserkjahraun is a large lava field covering the central part of Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland. The field was formed approximately 4,000 years ago during fissure eruptions from several volcanic craters in the area. The terrain is extremely rugged, with sharp, broken lava formations (aa lava) making travel across it difficult. The lava field is famous for appearing in Eyrbyggja Saga, one of Iceland's medieval sagas. According to the saga, a chieftain forced two berserker warriors to build a path through the impassable lava field, then murdered them afterward. A cleared track known as Berserkjagata ('Berserkers' Path') still runs through the lava field and is believed to follow the route described in the saga. Today, Route 54 crosses the lava field, offering dramatic views of the jagged black rock, moss-covered formations, and distant mountains. Several farms mentioned in the saga, including Bjarnarhöfn, still exist in the area. The field is a popular area for hiking, with trails leading through the lava formations and to small volcanic craters. The landscape is raw and hostile, perfectly matching the violent saga associated with it.
📖 Story
According to Eyrbyggja Saga, a chieftain named Víga-Styr received two Swedish berserkers as a gift. These fierce warriors could work like ten men, and Styr set them the task of clearing a path through the nearly impassable Berserkjahraun lava field. They succeeded — but when one of them fell in love with Styr's daughter and asked for her hand, Styr grew afraid of their power. He invited them to a bathhouse, heated it to unbearable temperatures, then ambushed and killed them. The path they built still crosses the lava field today, over a thousand years later.
