History & Background
The Alþingi parliament was originally founded in 930 at Þingvellir, making it one of the oldest parliaments in the world. Early Icelandic leaders gathered there each summer to create laws and resolve disputes. In 1845 the parliament was re-established in Reykjavik after several centuries of Danish rule. The current Alþingi building at Austurvöllur square was completed in 1881 and has served as the seat of Iceland’s parliament ever since.
