Suðurjökull

History & Background

Suðurjökull, like many of Iceland's glaciers, is a relatively young geological feature, having formed over the last few millennia during the Holocene epoch. Its existence is a testament to Iceland's unique position on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where volcanic activity and a subpolar oceanic climate combine to create conditions ripe for glaciation.
