The genesis of Keflavíkurkirkja traces back to a challenging period for the local community. While a church had never previously stood on this specific site, efforts to establish one began around the turn of the 20th century. A church designed and constructed by Guðmundur Jakobsson was nearing completion when, in November 1902, a powerful storm wreaked havoc, damaging the almost finished structure so severely that its construction was ultimately halted. This setback highlighted the formidable natural forces often faced by Icelandic communities. Undeterred, the people of Keflavík pressed on. In the autumn of 1913, a new site was chosen in consultation with architect Rögnvaldur Ólafsson. His vision materialized into the beautiful white church seen today, constructed in 1914. The dedication, however, took place on February 14, 1915. This new Keflavíkurkirkja became a symbol of the community's steadfast spirit and enduring faith. A notable artistic feature within the church is its altarpiece, created by the esteemed Icelandic artist Ásgrímur Jónsson. This significant work depicts Jesus delivering the Sermon on the Mount and has been an integral part of the church's interior since its very beginning, further enriching its cultural and religious value.
