This site in the Highlands is part of Iceland's intensely active volcanic landscape. Iceland sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge, making it one of the most volcanically active places on Earth. Historical records of eruptions in Iceland date back to the settlement era, with the 934 AD Eldgjá eruption being one of the largest lava flood eruptions in recorded history. The 1783 Laki eruption caused a devastating famine that killed about one-quarter of Iceland's population. More recently, the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption brought global attention to Iceland's volcanic power. Each volcanic site tells a chapter of this ongoing geological story.

Herðubreið ('Broad Shoulders') is Iceland's most iconic Highland mountain. The perfectly symmetrical table mountain rises 1,682 metres from black desert, formed by subglacial eruptions during Ice Age — lava erupting under ice creates the distinctive flat-topped shape. It's visible for 50+ kilometers. The mountain is sacred in Icelandic culture, called 'Queen of Mountains'. Outlaw Fjalla-Eyvindur hid in Herðubreiðarlindir oasis at its base in the 1700s. Hiking trails lead to the oasis (easy) and mountain base (moderate). The vista is otherworldly: black sand desert, green oasis, volcanic pyramid. 4WD access, summer only.

The Outlaw's Refuge

Iceland's vast, uninhabited highlands have been associated with outlaws since the saga age. The most famous highland outlaw was Fjalla-Eyvindur (Mountain Eyvindur), who lived as a fugitive in the highlands for over 20 years in the 18th century with his wife Halla. They survived the extreme conditions by living in caves, hunting, and occasionally raiding lowland farms. Their story has become legendary, representing the human capacity to endure against impossible odds. Ruins attributed to their shelters can still be found in the highlands, and their tale has inspired countless Icelandic books, poems, and songs about freedom, love, and survival in the wild heart of Iceland.
