歴史と背景
The Reykjanes Peninsula, where Litli-Hrútur is located, is a highly active volcanic zone. Iceland itself is geologically one of the world's youngest countries, constantly being shaped by its position on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge. This geological setting results in frequent seismic activity and volcanic eruptions. The Litli-Hrútur eruption in 2023 was part of a series of recent eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula, following those in Fagradalsfjall in 2021 and 2022. These events underscore the dynamic nature of the region. The eruption site, near the 310-312 meter high Litli-Hrútur mountain, became a focal point for both scientists studying volcanic processes and tourists eager to witness this rare natural phenomenon. The visible lava flows, as depicted, illustrate the ongoing creation of Icelandic landscape.
The Litli-Hrútur eruption was a short-lived fissure eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula in summer 2023, following the nearby eruptions of 2021 and 2022. Lava spread across previously undeveloped volcanic terrain and created another layer in the rapidly evolving Fagradalsfjall volcanic landscape. The eruption is a historical event and is not currently active. Access to the area can nevertheless change because of volcanic hazards, weather and civil-protection restrictions, so hikers should check official information before visiting.
民話
物語と民話
The 2023 eruption added another young lava field to the Fagradalsfjall area and demonstrated how quickly the Reykjanes landscape can change during an active volcanic period.
