Lambafellsgjá is a significant geological fissure, a testament to the powerful volcanic forces that have shaped the Reykjanes Peninsula over millennia. Formed by tectonic plate movements pulling the land apart, this open fissure is a prominent feature within Lambafell, an area known for its volcanic activity. The presence of pillow lava visible in the fissure's walls offers crucial insights into its formation. Pillow lava typically forms when molten lava erupts underwater or flows into water, cooling rapidly into distinct, rounded formations. This indicates that the region, or at least the lava flows that constitute Lambafell, was once submerged or interacted extensively with water during its creation. Situated near the distinctive Keilir mountain, a prominent hyaloclastite (subglacially formed) cone, Lambafellsgjá contributes to the rich geological tapestry of the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark. Its formation is part of the ongoing geological processes of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which bisects Iceland, continuously creating and shaping its dramatic landscape.

Lambafellsgjá is a remarkable geological fissure located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, near the distinctive Keilir mountain and the areas of Höskuldarvellir and Trölladyngja. This open, narrow fissure cuts dramatically through Lambafell, offering a truly immersive hiking experience. The gorge is only a few metres wide in places, with its towering, dark walls reaching roughly 50 metres in depth. As seen in the image, the path through the fissure is a mix of packed earth and loose volcanic rocks, creating an adventurous trail. Visible within the walls are fascinating formations of pillow lava, evidence of ancient underwater volcanic eruptions that shaped this unique landscape. A common and recommended approach for hiking Lambafellsgjá starts near Eldborg at Höskuldarvellir, with a clear trail leading north towards Lambafell. From there, hikers can ascend the fell from the south and walk down through the fissure. The entire outing, including the walk to and from the fissure, typically takes around two hours, involving a moderate elevation gain of about 40 metres. Due to the rough and exposed terrain, it is crucial for visitors to check local weather, road, and trail conditions before setting out, especially as the fissure is best walked in suitable summer conditions. The experience of walking through this ancient geological marvel provides a profound connection to Iceland's volcanic origins.
