The mountain was formed in a series of eruptions on the Reykjanes volcanic system. The hike to the summit takes 2–3 hours return on a well-marked trail through the Heiðmörk lava field. The summit cone gives a panoramic 360-degree view: Reykjavík to the north, the Reykjanes geothermal areas to the south, Snæfellsnes on the horizon to the northwest, and the entire lava plain of the peninsula spread out below.
