Garður has two lighthouses on its headland at the tip of the Reykjanes peninsula — the old red-and-white 1897 lighthouse and a newer concrete tower built in 1944. The headland between them has become one of Iceland's most reliable birdwatching spots, particularly during autumn migration when rare North American species blown off course land here first. The rock pools below the lighthouses are productive for waders and sea ducks. The Garður area faces directly south into the Atlantic and often gets Iceland's strongest surf. The old lighthouse has been converted into a small fishing museum. In clear weather, the Westman Islands and Reykjanes lava fields are visible simultaneously from the headland.
