Um upplifunina

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure on Falljökull, one of the outlet glaciers of Vatnajokull glacier, located in the  in the Skaftafell area. This comprehensive glacier hike combines stunning landscapes, fascinating geology, and the unique experience of exploring a natural ice cave up on the glacier, while hiking.

Tour Steps:

  1. Meet Your Guide – Begin at the Troll Expeditions meeting point in Skaftafell, where your certified glacier guide will welcome you.
  2. Get Geared Up – Receive all necessary equipment, including crampons, helmets, and ice axes, and a quick introduction to glacier hiking safety.
  3. Shuttle to the Glacier – A short 10-minute ride brings you to the foot of Falljökull glacier outlet.
  4. Hike to the Glacier – Walk about 15 minutes through the dramatic valley leading to the glacier tongue, and enjoy the scenic views.
  5. Glacier Hike & Ice Cave Exploration – Spend around 3 hours hiking across the glacier, where your guide explains how glaciers form and constantly change. The highlight is visiting a natural blue ice cave, while hiking on the massive and largest glacier in Europe, the Vatnajokul, where you’ll learn about ice cave formation and while admiring magical blue ice walls and crevasses. Along the way, you may also peer into moulins—vertical shafts that descend deep into the glacier—and, on clear days, enjoy views of Iceland’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur.
  6. Return and enjoy the complimentary refreshments we offer our clients – Hike back off the ice, take the shuttle to the meeting point, and conclude your tour with some refreshments: included in the tour are Hot Chocolate, Coffee, and typical Icelandic Chocolate bars!

During this experience, you’ll walk across millennia-old ice, shaped by nature’s immense forces, and immerse yourself in the peaceful, otherworldly wilderness of Skaftafell. The Falljökull glacier area and its dramatic landscapes have even also been featured in movies such as Game of Thrones and Oblivion, as well as Interstellar.

This tour is perfect for anyone looking to safely experience one of Iceland’s greatest natural wonders, ice caves and glacier hikes, combining the adventure of a hike, and the exploration of an ice cave into a single journey.
