Join a day tour from Reykjavík to Vestmannaeyjar Islands. This tour is filled with beautiful scenery, sea cliffs and volcanoes. You will have the opportunity to view puffins from up close, hike a volcano that erupted back in 1973 and view the lava field that destroyed parts of the town on the islands. You will be able to dig deeper into the history and the affects of the eruption to the Eldheimar Museum, often referred as the Pompeii of the North. You will be able to wander around town and stop by the Viking Church by the harbor.
Join a full-day tour from Reykjavík to the Westman Islands, known in Icelandic as Vestmannaeyjar. After pickup in Reykjavík, we drive to the Landeyjahöfn ferry terminal and board the Herjólfur ferry for a 30-minute crossing to the islands.
Our first stop is Elephant Rock, a basalt formation shaped by volcanic forces that looks like an elephant’s head. Then we head to Stórhöfði cape, where you can see puffins up close.
Next, we visit the Eldheimar Museum, often called the Pompeii of the North. Here you’ll learn about the 1973 eruption, when lava destroyed parts of the town, and how it changed life for the people living there. After a lunch break in town, you’ll hike Mt. Eldfell, the volcano behind that eruption. From the top, you’ll have views over the lava field, the town, and the surrounding islands.
We finish at Skansinn by the harbor, home to the Viking Church, a lighthouse, and views of the Heimaklettur cliffs. Enjoy some free time to wander around town before we take the ferry back to the mainland and drive to Reykjavík for an evening drop-off.
