Snæfellsnes is often called “Iceland in miniature,” because so much of the country is packed into one peninsula: volcanoes, craters, lava fields, a glacier, black sand beaches, and mountains. Our first stop is Borgarnes, where you can grab a coffee and a snack before we head out onto the peninsula. Private tour. Price is per vehicle.
Why choose a private tour?
Your trip, your way. We have a suggested route, but it’s only a starting point. If something catches your interest, we can change plans to fit it.
Go at your own pace. No one’s hurrying you back to the bus. Stay as long as you like wherever you like.
A guide who knows the place. Our guides know the history, the culture and the spots most visitors miss, and they’re happy to share all of it.
Nothing to organize. We take care of transport, bookings and the rest of the logistics. You just enjoy the day.
Stops on this tour:
✓ Ytri Tunga – One of the best places in Iceland to see seals, often lying out on the rocks just off the shore. The beach here is golden rather than black, which is rare in Iceland.
✓ Djúpalónssandur – A beach covered in smooth black pebbles below Snæfellsjökull. It was once a busy fishing station. Along the shore you’ll find rusted pieces of a British trawler that was wrecked here in 1948, and a set of old lifting stones that fishermen used to test their strength.
✓ Arnarstapi – A small former fishing village below Mt. Stapafell, with basalt cliffs full of nesting birds, including arctic terns. There’s also a large stone statue of Bárður Snæfellsáss, a half-human, half-troll figure from the sagas who is said to watch over the area.
✓ Snæfellsjökull – A glacier sitting on top of a cone-shaped volcano. Some people say the mountain has a special energy, and it’s where the explorers in Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth begin their trip underground.
✓ Ólafsvík – A working fishing village on the north side of the peninsula, where you can get a sense of everyday life in a small Icelandic town.
✓ Stykkishólmur – The largest town on Snæfellsnes, with a pretty harbor and colorful old houses.
✓ Kirkjufell – The arrow-shaped mountain on the north coast, and one of the most photographed in Iceland.
✓ Something extra – Depending on the time, the weather, and how everyone’s feeling, your guide may add a stop or two along the way.
