Um Viðey Island — Reykjavík's Island Escape

Viðey liggur 700 metrum frá ströndum Reykjavíkur — friðsæl 1,6 ferkílómetra eyja sem er aðgengileg með fimm mínútna ferju. Þar bjóðast gönguleiðir, fuglabjörg, 18. aldar steinbær (elsta steinbygging Íslands) og Friðarsúlan eftir Yoko Ono til minningar um John Lennon. Eyjan er lokuð fyrir bílum og að mestu óbyggð, sem gerir hana að auðveldasta náttúruflóttastað Reykjavíkur. Kríur verpa á sumrin og steypa sér að gestum, en á björtum dögum nær útsýnið yfir Faxaflóa að Esju og fjarlægum jöklum.

Bakgrunnur

Saga og bakgrunnur

Viðey settled c. 900s. Augustinian monastery founded 1225 (dissolved at Reformation 1539). Viðeyjarstofa built 1755 as merchant/sheriff residence — Iceland's first stone building. Island farmed until 1940s, then abandoned. Imagine Peace Tower unveiled 2007 on what would have been John Lennon's 67th birthday. Island now protected nature reserve.

Viðey is a small island off Reykjavík with open paths, historic buildings and artworks including Yoko Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower. There is no car bridge. Ferry trips from Skarfabakki and sometimes Old Harbour depend on seasonal timetables and weather; the crossing from Skarfabakki takes only a few minutes. Check the last return ferry before setting out. Stay on signed paths and respect birdlife. Setting: Island with open meadows, coastal paths, historical buildings and exposed shoreline. Visitor information: Island visits depend on weather, daylight and ferry schedules; no driving access.

Staðbundin þjóðsaga

The Island John Lennon Never Saw

Yoko Ono chose Viðey for the Imagine Peace Tower because John loved Iceland — though he never visited. The light that shines from the island each winter is visible across Reykjavík, a beam of peace over the city.
