Um

Um Torfajökull

Glacier and central volcanic feature in the colourful geothermal Torfajökull area of the Highlands.

Torfajökull forms part of the active Torfajökull central volcano and caldera system in the Highlands. The wider area contains Iceland's most extensive rhyolite terrain and major geothermal activity, with hot springs, altered volcanic rock, lava fields, canyons and glaciers shaping the landscape. Travel in this area requires highland planning and current road and weather information.

Staðbundin þjóðsaga

A Caldera Painted by Heat

Torfajökull's strongest story is geological. Rhyolite magma, geothermal alteration, glaciers and erosion have produced an unusually varied landscape of pale mountains, obsidian, coloured mineral deposits, hot springs and canyons. The system remains an active central volcano, and its eruption history is intertwined with other Icelandic volcanic systems. The colours visitors associate with Fjallabak are therefore not decorative accidents; they are evidence of the heat and chemistry beneath the landscape.
