The area around Tjörnin has been part of Reykjavík since the earliest development of the city. Over time the pond became a natural gathering place as government buildings, parks and cultural institutions were built around it. Reykjavík City Hall was completed in 1992 on the northern edge of the pond, further strengthening its role as a central landmark in the capital. Today Tjörnin remains one of the most beloved public spaces in Reykjavík.

Tjörnin, meaning “The Pond”, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in central Reykjavík. The small lake sits between Reykjavík City Hall, the Icelandic parliament building Alþingi and several cultural institutions, making it a key part of the city center. The pond is known for its large population of birds including swans, ducks and geese that live around the water throughout the year. Many visitors enjoy walking along the paths surrounding the pond and feeding the birds while taking in views of colorful houses and historic buildings. During winter, when temperatures drop, the pond often freezes and locals sometimes use it for ice skating. A geothermal outlet keeps a small section ice-free so birds can survive even during cold weather. Because of its peaceful atmosphere and central location, Tjörnin is a popular stop on Reykjavík walking tours and one of the most photographed spots in the city.
