„Á Þingeyrum var fyrsta klaustrið á Íslandi stofnsett árið 1133 og upp frá því varð staðurinn eitt af mestu menningarsetrum landsins. Margar Íslendingasögur eru taldar skráðar í klaustrinu, sem stóð allt til siðaskipta árið 1550. Á árunum 1864-77 reisti Ásgeir Einarsson alþingismaður kirkju á Þingeyrum sem þykir með merkustu kirkjuhúsum landsins. Er hún hlaðin grjóti sem sótt var vestur í Nesbjörg handan Hópsins. Í hvelfingu kirkjunnar eru 1000 gylltar stjörnur, jafnmargar og rúðurnar í bogagluggum hennar.“
