Um Seltjarnarnes — The Quiet Peninsula at the Edge of Reykjavík

Seltjarnarnes er lítið nes við norðvesturenda Reykjavíkursvæðisins, með Gróttu vita á odda þess. Nesið býður upp á frábæra fuglaskoðun (kríur, æðarfuglar, vaðfuglar), jarðhitasund með víðsýnu útsýni, gönguleiðir meðfram grýttri strönd og sumt af bestu sólseturssýnum á höfuðborgarsvæðinu. Á veturna, vegna hins opna sjóndeildarhrings, er þetta einn besti staðurinn nálægt borginni til að sjá norðurljós.

Bakgrunnur

Saga og bakgrunnur

Seltjarnarnes was one of the earliest settled areas in the Reykjavík region, with evidence of Viking-age farms. The Grótta lighthouse was first built in 1897 and has guided ships into Reykjavík harbour ever since. The area remained rural and sparsely populated until the 20th century suburban expansion of Reykjavík extended to the peninsula.

Seltjarnarnes is a separate municipality at the western edge of the Reykjavík urban area, known for coastal walking, Bakkatjörn and the Grótta lighthouse nature reserve. It is not a district of Reykjavík municipality. Remember that Grótta island has bird-nesting closure and tidal access limits. Setting: Coastal municipality with residential streets, nature reserves and open sea views. Visitor information: Public coastal paths have no general admission, but access restrictions apply to Grótta and private land.
