Steinasafn Petru er arfleifð Petru Sveinsdóttur (1922-2012), merkrar konu frá Stöðvarfirði á Austurlandi. Frá unga aldri þróaði Petra mikla ástríðu fyrir því að safna steinum og steinefnum, áhugamál sem átti eftir að móta líf hennar. Hún safnaði vandlega sýnishornum frá fjöllum, ströndum og árfarvegum Íslands, sérstaklega frá Austfjörðum, og byggði upp ótrúlegt einkasafn. Heimili hennar, einmitt byggingin sem nú hýsir safnið, varð lifandi vitnisburður um ástríðu hennar. Hvert herbergi, hver hilla og hvert horn var fyllt með jarðfræðilegum fjársjóðum hennar.
