Mormon missionary activity reached Vestmannaeyjar in 1851, and Mormónapollur became one of the places used for baptisms. Some Icelandic converts later emigrated to Utah. A memorial was erected by the lagoon in 2000 in recognition of this chapter of Icelandic migration and religious history.
